Ainsley Luken: Design Associate with Saltwater Home

Background

I came into the field of interior design because I’ve watched my parents renovate all our houses, and I grew up watching renovation shows with them. They both always have had an interest in the field, so I got a lot of inspiration from them. I began working with Annie during my senior year of high school and have been gaining experience with her since then. I am currently studying to get my Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Architecture at Endicott College.

Inspiration

I find inspiration for me comes from nature such as the ocean, looking at other designs/ other designers, and looking at tangible items such as fabric, rug, or finish samples. With that, I get ideas and am inspired to design. I love the use of light in a space with natural materials and colors. Also, seeing the whole thing come together at the end is one of the best parts of the process.

Living in Maine on the seacoast means sun, fresh air, and the sounds of waves. I moved from the Midwest when I was 11, so coming here was a big difference, but a good one. In Maine, you can be at the ocean in one place, then take a short drive to the trees, which gives me a lot of inspiration. I also like the relaxation of sitting by the water and watching sailboats or birds go by.

On working with clients

My favorite part about working with clients is seeing the difference between our projects and their homes, and what they envision for the space. I enjoy seeing some clients who know exactly what they like and want, and some who leave it more up to the team. Each of their homes is so different as well, so it is fun to change up the design for each one.

When did you first get excited about Interior Design?

My earliest memories of interior design are from when I was little living in Illinois. My parents renovated our family house, so I’ve watched home videos of me in that process. My sister and I would also build little “houses” out of blocks, or draw floorplans for our toys to live in. We would add lots of color and pictures to our bedroom and pretend that different areas were different rooms for our dolls.

Something that makes me unique is my passion for this field and my love for design. I enjoy every part of the process and the creativity and responsibility that comes with it.
