Natural Fiber Fabrics

At Saltwater Home, we are your interior designers and your environmental consultants. We want your home to be natural, responsible spaces. When you work with us, we work as a team to guide you; providing input about natural fabrics that will be durable for their purpose in your homes while also sharing the sustainability of using natural fibers over synthetics.

Natural fabrics are made from raw materials that are spun into threads and yarns and are then woven or knit into a fabric. For this reason, natural fabric is more expensive than synthetic, but much more worth the money as they are higher quality, more durable, and 100% eco-friendly. They are a sure way to make your house feel curated, natural, and breathable.

Here are our top favorite natural fabrics to be used in the homes we live and design:

Cotton

Saltwater Home

Cotton is a versatile, breathable, durable, and easy to care for fabric. It’s super-soft and hypoallergenic. Cotton is used for many different purposes throughout your home. We love to use it for bath towels, dish towels, and table cloths.

Linen

Saltwater Home

Linen Fibers are derived from flax plant and are one of the most sustainable materials. Linen is twice as strong as cotton but does not go back to it’s original shape after being stretched. It becomes softer with every wash and dries easily, making it a popular choice for summertime. Linen resists dirt and stains and can withstand high temperatures, making it our favorite choice for upholstery, sheets, and window coverings.

Silk

CB2

One of the most luxurious fabrics in the world. Silk is smooth, elegantly soft, and wrinkle resistant. Silk has heating and cooling properties, naming it a great option for all seasons. We love silk for anything that will be close to the sensitive skin like pillowcases and robes.

Wool

Melin Tregwynt

Wool is made from the fleece of sheep, alpaca, and other animals. its absorbent, warm and cozy. Although wool makes for the best sweaters in the colder weather, it’s also commonly used in area rugs to add warmth and softness to your area.

Hemp

H + E Goods Company

Hemp is one of the few agricultural products that has many different purposes for example, it is used for food, clothes, houses, and medicinal purposes. It is made from dense plant that requires no pesticides or herbicides. Hemp is very durable and ethically takes fewer resources to maintain. Hemp gets softer with each wash and can handle varying water temperatures. It will last longer than cotton or linen!

Have you ever noticed how well your natural fibers hold up much longer than synthetic ones? We love sharing our views on purchasing things that are meaningful and made to last. Natural fibers are a much better investment in your home not to mention more sustainable for our environment.

One of our favorite mottos, bringing the outdoors in, is relevant for everything that is brought into your home! Using natural, non-toxic materials gives good flow and energy, allowing you to breathe well in your home. Snuggle with them, upholster with them, entertain with them. Surround yourself with natural fibers to give yourself a natural way of life and a home built for well-being.
